Series in the bag and a demoralised Sri Lanka at their disposal, India will be hoping to sign off on a winning note in the fifth and final cricket ODI on Sunday.

With the fate of the series sealed at Eden Gardens and holiday spirit in the air, players from both sides would have to find some motivation for Sunday’s tie which has been rendered of mere academic interest.

Leading the Indian side in absence of regular skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni – who served a two-match ban – Virender Sehwag wanted to seal the issue in Kolkata itself for he was not sure of the track at Feroz Shah Kotla.

Having achieved that, the home side can now let their hair down and experiment with the playing XI.

Having missed the last two One-dayers, Dhoni is back in the side again, and for him Sunday’s match would be a dress rehearsal for the tri-series in Bangladesh next month.

The 2-1 scoreline is not unexpected given the way India have pushed Sri Lanka to the brink in all but one game – a Twenty20 – played in the limited-overs leg of the tour. But now, with the home team missing two match-winners, a hurting Sri Lanka have a realistic chance of leveling the series.

This will be the first time since MS Dhoni’s debut in 2004 that India play an ODI without him and Yuvraj Singh. Dhoni has often said that missing Yuvraj is a big blow, so how India cope with the loss of their captain and best batsman in ODIs in addition to Yuvraj will be crucial.

The build-up to this game has been dominated by the two-match ban handed down to MS Dhoni for India’s appallingly slow over-rate in Nagpur. With Dhoni out of the fray, Sri Lanka’s own woes have been obscured. Angelo Mathews, who clinched victory in Nagpur, is the latest to join the incapacitated list, with Thissara Perera flying in to take his place, and it’s still uncertain whether Lasith Malinga will be risked after missing the first two games. The missing-in-action theme has affected India too, though Yuvraj Singh is expected to be fit to shore up a middle order that will sorely miss Dhoni’s remarkable consistency.

All-rounder Yuvraj Singh has been again ruled out while opening batsman Virender Sehwag is fit as India take on Sri Lanka in the second One-Day International at the Vidarbha Cricket Association (VCA) Stadium on Friday.

Yuvraj, who missed the first ODI in Rajkot with a finger fracture, is yet to recover from his injury and is also down with flu while Sehwag has recovered from the ankle injury he suffered while fielding in the last match.

After the record run feast in Rajkot, where more than 800 runs were scored for the second time in ODIs, bowlers won’t have a respite as the VCA Stadium also promises a run-friendly wicket.

After a one-sided Test series and an even Twenty20 contest, during which flat pitches and big bats rendered the spinners ineffective, India and Sri Lanka embark upon a five-match ODI series beginning in Rajkot. Chastened by a 2-0 defeat in the Tests, Sri Lanka have a shot at redemption during this final leg of the tour.

The focus will be on Kumar Sangakkara and how he backs his talk with leadership and runs – he did thump exceptional fifties in the Twenty20s. The most interesting sub-plots of the series, though, should be the return of Zaheer Khan to 50-over cricket, and Sanath Jayasuriya’s expected move down to the middle order. Jayasuriya’s equation in the middle order – where he has not batted regularly since the early 1990s – and his role with the ball as Sri Lanka nurse Muttiah Muralitharan back will be crucial if Sri Lanka are to compete with India. For Sri Lanka these five matches provide an opportunity to assess their one-day prospects and identify areas they need to work on.
