Tillakaratne Dilshan cracked a solid century to power Sri Lanka to an emphatic seven-wicket victory over Bangladesh in a triangular One-day series on Monday.

The in-form opener hit 104 for his sixth One-day hundred as Sri Lanka surpassed Bangladesh’s 260/7 with more than five overs to spare in the day-night match.

Bangladesh were earlier well-served by Mohammad Ashraful, who made an impressive 75 to help his side post a competitive total.

Ashraful reached his 20th half-century in One-Day Internationals with an aggressive shot, pulling paceman Suranga Lakmal for a four. He hit six boundaries in his 94-ball knock before being run out in the penultimate over.

Bangladesh scored 92 in the last 10 overs, with Naeem Islam (22 not out) smashing 20 in the closing over bowled by Lakmal.

Series in the bag and a demoralised Sri Lanka at their disposal, India will be hoping to sign off on a winning note in the fifth and final cricket ODI on Sunday.

With the fate of the series sealed at Eden Gardens and holiday spirit in the air, players from both sides would have to find some motivation for Sunday’s tie which has been rendered of mere academic interest.

Leading the Indian side in absence of regular skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni – who served a two-match ban – Virender Sehwag wanted to seal the issue in Kolkata itself for he was not sure of the track at Feroz Shah Kotla.

Having achieved that, the home side can now let their hair down and experiment with the playing XI.

Having missed the last two One-dayers, Dhoni is back in the side again, and for him Sunday’s match would be a dress rehearsal for the tri-series in Bangladesh next month.

The 2-1 scoreline is not unexpected given the way India have pushed Sri Lanka to the brink in all but one game – a Twenty20 – played in the limited-overs leg of the tour. But now, with the home team missing two match-winners, a hurting Sri Lanka have a realistic chance of leveling the series.

This will be the first time since MS Dhoni’s debut in 2004 that India play an ODI without him and Yuvraj Singh. Dhoni has often said that missing Yuvraj is a big blow, so how India cope with the loss of their captain and best batsman in ODIs in addition to Yuvraj will be crucial.

All-rounder Yuvraj Singh has been again ruled out while opening batsman Virender Sehwag is fit as India take on Sri Lanka in the second One-Day International at the Vidarbha Cricket Association (VCA) Stadium on Friday.

Yuvraj, who missed the first ODI in Rajkot with a finger fracture, is yet to recover from his injury and is also down with flu while Sehwag has recovered from the ankle injury he suffered while fielding in the last match.

After the record run feast in Rajkot, where more than 800 runs were scored for the second time in ODIs, bowlers won’t have a respite as the VCA Stadium also promises a run-friendly wicket.

After a one-sided Test series and an even Twenty20 contest, during which flat pitches and big bats rendered the spinners ineffective, India and Sri Lanka embark upon a five-match ODI series beginning in Rajkot. Chastened by a 2-0 defeat in the Tests, Sri Lanka have a shot at redemption during this final leg of the tour.

The focus will be on Kumar Sangakkara and how he backs his talk with leadership and runs – he did thump exceptional fifties in the Twenty20s. The most interesting sub-plots of the series, though, should be the return of Zaheer Khan to 50-over cricket, and Sanath Jayasuriya’s expected move down to the middle order. Jayasuriya’s equation in the middle order – where he has not batted regularly since the early 1990s – and his role with the ball as Sri Lanka nurse Muttiah Muralitharan back will be crucial if Sri Lanka are to compete with India. For Sri Lanka these five matches provide an opportunity to assess their one-day prospects and identify areas they need to work on.

It has been a terrific days play for Indians. They were at one stage trouble after losing 4 early wickets. All there frontline masters were gone to rookies of Srilankans. And then after that Dravid unfolded his magic. Boundaries after boundaries, and he even hit a six, can you believe that, Dravid hitting a six. Srilankans will be ruing the fact that they omitted Mendis from the playing 11. He might have been some damage maker. If only they could have got one more wicket, then it would have been Srilanka after close of day sitting and looking pretty.

India (IND) vs Srilanka (SL), 20-20, at Colombo, Free Live Cricket Streaming

After demolishing Sri Lanka 4-1 in the just-concluded ODI series, world champions India will have a distinct edge over the depleted hosts when the sides lock horn in the first Twenty20 match on Lankan soil.

Sri Lanka will hope to carry forward some of the confidence regained after winning the fifth and final match but Sunday’s defeat was just a blip on the Indian team’s radar after Mahendra Singh Dhoni and his men dictated terms for the most part of the series.

With Sri Lanka deciding to rest key players, including regular captain Mahela Jayawardene, deputy Kumar Sangakkara and the spin twins of Muttiah Muralitharan and Ajantha Mendis, Tillakaratne Dilshan will have an unenviable task at hand when he walks out for the toss on Tuesday

Indian opener Gautam Gambhir says the main reason for his team’s success in Sri Lanka is the way his team-mates have countered skilful
spinners Muttiah Muralitharan and Ajantha Mendis.

“I think the way we have played Mendis and Murali is just incredible,” Gambhir said after being named man of the match for his career-best 150 in the fourth One-Day International.

India are leading 4-0 in the ongoing five-match series.

“The way our batsman, especially Yuvraj Singh, Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Virender Sehwag, have played Mendis and Murali is fantastic. We are 4-0 up and hope to make it 5-0,” said Gambhir.
