Kevin Pietersen found inspiration from his fraught relationship with South Africa to deliver another Lord’s century and ensure England dominated the first day of the npower Test series.
Ever since Pietersen quit his homeland in protest at the quota system, which he believed was hinder ing his opportunities, to take his chances with England,
he has been a major target for the Proteas.
He was barracked on and off the pitch during his maiden one-day series in South Africa in 2004-5, during which he scored three centuries, and only this week captain Graeme Smith remarked: “Kevin and I would get on a lot better if he kept his mouth shut.

England v N Zealand, 3rd Test, Trent Bridge, 3rd day
Arriving at the ground yesterday morning, New Zealand might have hoped for three early wickets and, by the end of the day, a first-innings lead or at least parity. Instead, thanks to a maiden Test match half-century from Stuart Broad, then swing bowling of the highest class from James Anderson, they ended the day 268 runs adrift – just five fewer than they began it – but their hopes were now in tatters and the series, to all intents and purposes, was gone.oks like he is going to take the rest of the wickets.

The opening Test between England and New Zealand continued to be ruined by the weather as only 8.5 overs of play was possible on day three at Lord’s.
Early morning drizzle meant a delayed start to proceedings before another shower at midday forced the players from the field. In what little action there was England managed to score 21 runs without the loss of a wicket to take their first innings total to 89-0.
Alastair Cook used the time to move to his half century, his 17th 50-plus score in Test cricket coming up with a well-timed four through the covers. The Essex opener will resume on Sunday morning on 53 not out, with opening partner Andrew Strauss alongside him on 31.
Umpires Steve Bucknor and Simon Taufel scheduled several afternoon inspections just when it appeared the rain had relented. However, on each occasion they threatened to leave the safety of the pavilion and get remotely close to the middle the heavens opened again.
By 5.30pm the downpours were getting heavier and the officials decided enough was enough, abandoning play for the day.
With only two days to go a positive result for either teams looks a long shot, though England – who still trail by 188 – will be hoping to engineer themselves into a strong position providing the dark clouds disappear

Sidebottom rectified his performance and claimed four wickets for five runs in 10.1 overs to dismiss New Zealand for 277 after they had resumed on 208 for six.
During a second day disrupted with five interruptions for bad light, which restricted play to just 55.4 overs, the importance of Sidebottom’s revival was underlined by openers Alastair Cook and Andrew Strauss setting a nice platform for an England lead by guiding them to 68 without loss.
Having batted through the difficult, swing-friendly conditions on the previous day the tourists set out to win a battle of attrition with an England attack determined to make a breakthrough by bowling disciplined lines and lengths.
It did not make for particularly entertaining viewing, especially in an age of high-tempo Twenty20 cricket.
The tourists added just 14 runs in the opening 10 overs, and it took Sidebottom to break the stalemate and end Jacob Oram’s defiant innings.
All-rounder Oram had battled for over two hours for his 28 providing excellent support to Brendon McCullum the previous evening and captain Daniel Vettori for 43 frustrating minutes in gloomy conditions at the start of play.
Cook was particularly dominant, taking 14 off one over from 19-year-old Southee and while Strauss was more circumspect, he grew in confidence sufficiently to pull Chris Martin through midwicket for one of two boundaries.
But with little prospect of the light improving when the players came off the field for a third time shortly before 6pm, England were denied the opportunity to build on their promising start and on yet another impressive intervention from their player of the year.

England’s decision to retain a young and vibrant attack paid dividends after they exploited seamer-friendly conditions to plunge New Zealand into trouble in the opening Test at Lord’s.
England kept their faith in the line-up that had won the last two Tests on their tour of New Zealand rather than opt to recall the experience of Yorkshire seamer Matthew Hoggard.
It was a decision fully vindicated with James Anderson claiming three wickets and Stuart Broad a further two before a defiant innings of 97 from Brendon McCullum guided the tourists to 208 for six when bad light ended play after just 52.1 overs.
Captain Michael Vaughan had used his pre-match press conference to challenge his young attack to deliver the type of performances which would condemn the likes of Hoggard and Steve Harmison to a lengthy spell on the county circuit waiting for a recall.
It was a message which galvanised both Anderson and Broad into superb early spells and left New Zealand reeling on 76 for four after England once again exposed the inexperience in their top order.England’s decision to retain a young and vibrant attack paid dividends after they exploited seamer-friendly conditions to plunge New Zealand into trouble in the opening Test at Lord’s.
He raced to 19 off 20 balls before mistiming an attempted pull off Broad and allowing Paul Collingwood to run back from slip to take the catch while Marshall’s determined innings was ended with an edged push to slip.
Facing potential embarrassment, New Zealand found a saviour in McCullum, who curbed his naturally aggressive style to try and salvage a competitive total.
He was kept company for eight overs by Daniel Flynn, the second debutant in the tourists’ line-up, but once he was bowled off his pad by Anderson the responsibility fell on McCullum’s shoulders.
England knew all about his powerful hitting after his stunning one-day performances against them earlier this winter while he recently lit up the Indian Premier League by hammering 158 off 73 balls for Kolkata Knight Riders against Bangalore Royal Challengers.
This, though, was a more restrained McCullum in partnership with all-rounder Jacob Oram, who reached the tea interval on 36 off 54 balls.
But immediately after the interval McCullum came to life and quickly began accelerating towards reaching a Lord’s century, which was denied him by just four runs back in 2004.
Left-arm spinner Monty Panesar was launched down the ground for his first six and Broad was also picked up, this time over long off, in the next over to clear the ropes and move him into the 90s.
With his century in sight, however, McCullum perhaps became too anxious to reach three figures before the bad light closed in and attempted to clip Panesar off his legs for the boundary he required.
On this occasion, McCullum mistimed his stroke and the ball bounced off his pads and onto his stumps to leave him stranded on 97, having hit 13 fours and two sixes in his 97-ball innings.
His acceleration had been frightening, adding 61 off 42 balls after the tea interval, and his dismissal a timely breakthrough for an England attack who had lost their way during his assault.
It also tipped the scales in England’s favour and probably left McCullum regretting his rush of blood with bad light being offered and accepted just two overs later to halt an opening day’s play already disrupted by early morning rain.
