45th match: Mumbai Indians v Kings XI Punjab at Mumbai – May 21, 2008

Wednesday, May 21st, 2008 57 views

It was Delhi’s sixth win in 12 matches and kept alive their chances of reaching the last four. For Bangalore, who are already out of the race, it was their ninth defeat in 11 matches. Chasing a target of 155, Delhi began aggressively with captain Virender Sehwag(47) and Gautam Gambhir (39) putting on 90 runs for the opening wicket in just seven overs.

Sehwag was in a belligerent mood as he smashed nine boundaries and a six in his 19-ball knock. He was particularly severe on Praveen Kumar. The latter had the final word though, taking the prized scalp, thanks to a splendid catch by Bharat Chipli.

Two overs later and after the addition of 10 more runs, Gambhir, who had earlier become the first batsman in the tournament to surpass 500 runs, was run out by Cameron White.

44th match: Kolkata Knight Riders v Rajasthan Royals at Kolkata – May 20, 2008

Tuesday, May 20th, 2008 65 views

After another week of action Rajasthan Royals retain top spot of the points table, thanks to more wins over Deccan and Delhi. Meanwhile, Chennai Super Kings were involved in two closely contested matches, edging out Delhi to victory on the final ball on Thursday, whilst stopping Punjab’s comeback with a hat trick thanks to Balaji. That also put an end to Punjab’s five match winning streak but sees them remain at third on the ladder.

Into the second half of the series, it seems likely that Kolkata or Delhi will be fighting it out for a semi finals berth amongst the other top three teams.

Match scheduled to begin at 20:00 local time (14:30 GMT).

Newzealand vs England 1st test 2008 – Day 4

Sunday, May 18th, 2008 68 views

The opening Test between England and New Zealand continued to be ruined by the weather as only 8.5 overs of play was possible on day three at Lord’s.

Early morning drizzle meant a delayed start to proceedings before another shower at midday forced the players from the field. In what little action there was England managed to score 21 runs without the loss of a wicket to take their first innings total to 89-0.

Alastair Cook used the time to move to his half century, his 17th 50-plus score in Test cricket coming up with a well-timed four through the covers. The Essex opener will resume on Sunday morning on 53 not out, with opening partner Andrew Strauss alongside him on 31.

Umpires Steve Bucknor and Simon Taufel scheduled several afternoon inspections just when it appeared the rain had relented. However, on each occasion they threatened to leave the safety of the pavilion and get remotely close to the middle the heavens opened again.

By 5.30pm the downpours were getting heavier and the officials decided enough was enough, abandoning play for the day.

With only two days to go a positive result for either teams looks a long shot, though England – who still trail by 188 – will be hoping to engineer themselves into a strong position providing the dark clouds disappear

1st Test Newzealand v England at Lord’s – May 15-19, 2008 – Day 3

Saturday, May 17th, 2008 65 views

Sidebottom rectified his performance and claimed four wickets for five runs in 10.1 overs to dismiss New Zealand for 277 after they had resumed on 208 for six.

During a second day disrupted with five interruptions for bad light, which restricted play to just 55.4 overs, the importance of Sidebottom’s revival was underlined by openers Alastair Cook and Andrew Strauss setting a nice platform for an England lead by guiding them to 68 without loss.

Having batted through the difficult, swing-friendly conditions on the previous day the tourists set out to win a battle of attrition with an England attack determined to make a breakthrough by bowling disciplined lines and lengths.

It did not make for particularly entertaining viewing, especially in an age of high-tempo Twenty20 cricket.

The tourists added just 14 runs in the opening 10 overs, and it took Sidebottom to break the stalemate and end Jacob Oram’s defiant innings.

All-rounder Oram had battled for over two hours for his 28 providing excellent support to Brendon McCullum the previous evening and captain Daniel Vettori for 43 frustrating minutes in gloomy conditions at the start of play.

Cook was particularly dominant, taking 14 off one over from 19-year-old Southee and while Strauss was more circumspect, he grew in confidence sufficiently to pull Chris Martin through midwicket for one of two boundaries.

But with little prospect of the light improving when the players came off the field for a third time shortly before 6pm, England were denied the opportunity to build on their promising start and on yet another impressive intervention from their player of the year.
