Just heard through cricinfo that Afridi will be quitting tests after the next game. Disappointing. Always believed after his hundred at Chennai vs India in 1999, that with the right people around him he could be a pretty good test batsman. Thought captaincy would have the same effect on him as batting alongside an Anwar.

In the first innings Azhar Ali showed he had Salman’s temperament and with this, regardless of what he does/did on Day 4, don’t think anyone will be displacing him anytime soon. Of all those who’ve sat on the recent Pak middleorder revolving chair, he’s looked the most relaxed with very watchable shots.

One of the best things about Salman Butt is the easy batting relationship he seems to enter into, whoever the other guy is. Exactly what debutants need.

Preplay was expecting Marcus North to have a good time. Looked quite cool in his short stay. Maybe next game.

Paine has always been a strange character to watch. Has a stunning T20 game but plays an ODI game similar to his Test one. So what. Nothing. Just trying to ease my way towards the latest endorser of Ritalin finally making his legspinning debut.

Well, at least one new thing came out of Pak’s batting today. Azhar Ali – seems a Salman Butt sort of character. Appears to have his temperament. Whether he has his shots, the 2nd innings will tell. Even with the Aus bowling (barring Johnson) being hardly what it should be, Afridi and the selectors’ decision with regard to a lineup sans Younis-Yousuf demands patience from Pakistani fans before things can even get consistent.

He might not have got even a 50, but apart from his little burst in the 2nd T20, this is probably the best Clarke has played (in any format) since he was last at Lord’s during the Ashes. Beautiful. And I’m not even a Clarke fan.

Comparisons with players of different eras is always a risky thing to do. But during one of those post-match talks in the recent T20s, Rameez Raja claimed Aamer at this stage of his career was far ahead of what Wasim was at the same stage. Big, big thing to say. So, let’s forget about the Wasim thing for a while and consider just this – of all the Pakistani bowlers over the last year and a half, barring 1 day in a test in Aus (where he was sick and was puking all over the field) you can’t really look back and recall Aamer having an off-day. That’s probably all he should be judged by, though he does look the stable type capable of handling higher expectations and opinions.

For Aus – You can be certain Bollinger-Johnson will have their say, with Hilfenhaus (if the conditions stay similar) probably doing an Asif. And with two debutantes in the Pak side, Salman Butt and later Afridi will be critical in a shepherding role.

Test cricket is brilliant.
